I did this because of the high demand for these screen-accurate prosthetic pieces and found that over 80% of my customers were eBay users and usually looked there first for products such as these. At TraumaFX I get allot of requests for economically priced Joker Scars. Our Silicone Joker Scars are extremely popular but not for everyone. So I took the same sculpts and made molds for Prosthetic Grade Gelatin. That was a good move for me - they are flying off the shelves! And it was a good move for my customers whom all I want to do is make them happy. Now they have an option when it comes to scars.

Joker enthusiasts want only the BEST when it comes to realistic, screen accurate, PROFESSIONAL scars. They don't want something made in somebody's dorm room or in dad's garage. They want an adhesive that will stick and stay put. They want edges that blend seamlessly into the skin. And they want nothing but the highest quality at a reasonable price.

Our Joker Scars are made from Professional Grade Prosthetic Gelatin - the SAME type used by SFX makeup artists in many, many major motion pictures. It takes a specific type of gelatin and a special formula to produce scars that are soft, flexible and as translucent as real skin.

The photos of the scars seen here are fresh out of the molds and still have the "flashing" attached (thick parts around the scars themselves). Flashing allows you to position the scar on your face, apply adhesive and then literally dissolve the micro-thin edges into your skin using our Gel Blender fluid. The flashing then comes cleanly away leaving you with perfect scars and perfect edges (see example photos).

Some scars may have slightly separated from the flashing during shipping - this is NORMAL and will NOT affect the application. Now all you have left to do is apply the makeup. Instructions come with every set of scars.

Starting Your Own Business? Worried About Failure?

When I started TraumaFX, I think allot of people laughed inside.

There were times when I wondered if this was just a stupid dream and I was the only one believing in it.

For the first year or so I told a number of people what I planned on doing and 95% of their reactions weren't making me feel any better about my plan. I suppose it was my fear of people thinking I would fail (my products are very specialized, not mainstream, but much needed).

There were many who said, "you want to sell what?". And the half-smile on their face I interpreted as feeling sorry me and my misguided venture that they believed was doomed to failure, but they were too polite to say it.

That's when I quit talking about it.

So I concentrated on success. I read everything I could on motivation, inspiration, marketing, attitude and faith. I sought out and talked to successful business owners. I listened and learned. I read books, I signed up for newsletters from motivation, inspirational and financial leaders.

All the while I kept planning and building - I did not give up because of other people's opinions.

Finally, a year ago, I launched my website - www.traumafx.com. I have received nothing but positive comments and incredible encouragement. Website visitors are up an average of nearly 1200% each day. Sales are beginning to follow this trend. It has been a very successful year at TraumaFX.

For those of you who have ever had the dream of starting your own business - whether it be a brick and mortar store or online, here's a quick bit of inspiration that kept me going through it all. I have it hanging (along with many others) in my office where I can look at it during those times of doubt. It was from a speech by President Theodore Roosevelt, at the Sorbonne in 1910.

Here it is:

"It is not the critic that counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better.
No, the credit belongs to the man in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and blood and sweat, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause. Who at best, knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat because they have never even tried."


Here's the question you need to ask yourself:

"If you knew you couldn't fail, and you could do whatever you wanted to do, what would that look like?"

If you can answer that question, then THAT'S what you need to do in your life. Take the leap of faith.

Is there life after Halloween?

Wow! What a BUSY year at TraumaFX!

Our sales surpassed last year even as we lowered our prices to meet the competition! International sales were through the roof this year too.

I think the reason so many people are finding out about TraumaFX (www.traumafx.com) is simply word-of-mouth. No kidding. Our advertising campaign was very minimal using only Google Adwords and Facebook. Even with those two forms of marketing, you could probably make more money mowing a couple of lawns or babysitting on a weekend than was spent on advertising.

Here's what I think happened: A number of customers took the chance after finding TraumaFX and ordered a few products. They liked the prices and the products so much they came back (we had many, many repeat customers), then they told their friends. Their friends inhabit Facebook, MySpace, Film, Makeup and Superhero forums. Some just sent friends a regular old email. Whatever happened, it was phenomenal.

I can't thank our customers enough. Now it's time to add many more products to the TraumaFX line. The next three months are Research and Development time and we've got some products being tested now that have never been on the market before!

Prosthetics - It's new, it's exciting and it will make life SO MUCH EASIER for those who have little to no experience with prosthetics. Everybody wants their prosthetics to look real, to blend seamlessly into their skin and to stay on! We're in the process of making that happen. Imagine a silicone or latex prosthetic that blends seamlessly into your skin and only takes two to three minutes to apply.

Imitation Grease - You've seen the grease on your local mechanic, right? It sits in the creases of his skin and smears across his arms and face. It takes a strong soap to try and get that off! We've developed an imitation grease that is identical to the stuff you see on your local car repairman, but it comes completely off with just a little soap and water! Oh, and it's GOOD for your skin too!

TraumaFX Fan Club? That's Right!

First, a BIG thank you to all of my customers! You are making this year a banner one for TraumaFX. Sales have already exceeded last year and we're welcoming new customers every day!

I have just been informed that there is now a TraumaFX Fan Club in the U.K.! Is THAT cool or what!?

Nearly 1/3 of all my sales are to the U.K., and I've made many, many wonderful friends through TraumaFX. I could not be this successful without you. I am humbled not only to have you as valued customers, but to know that you like my products enough to start a fan club. I am truly blessed.

There is another business located in the U.K. named TraumaFX, but not related in any way to our U.S. based business. They too have great products and services - check them out sometime.

UPDATE: Things are VERY busy at TraumaFX (www.traumafx.com) - working 17 hour days to produce, package and ship orders all over the world. My customers in Canada are multiplying every week. The U.S. customer base is also increasing at a steady rate and products are flying out the door as fast as I can ship them!

Thanks again to my wonderful friends in the U.K. for starting the TraumaFX Fan Club. Hopefully, I can make it "across the pond" in the very near future and meet everyone. I'll buy the first drink!

Wow! Things are CRAZY at www.traumafx.com

The word is getting out! Products at www.traumafx.com are keeping the shipping companies (and me) REALLY busy!

My motivation for starting TraumaFX was to offer high quality, reasonably priced products - and it's working!
I was frustrated by all the "big name" makeup companies selling the same products at an enormous markup so I began my own line. Granted, I still have a long way to go and there are so many products I have to put in my online store, but I'm getting there. I understand that it's a narrow "niche" of a market and in order to make any kind of a profit, you've got to increase the prices to cover all your costs, but I can't morally justify gouging the people that may someday save your life (EMS, etc.). It just isn't right. So, I'll make a few dollars here and there and pray that I'm helping in whatever small way I can.

Volunteer EMS or Fire companies just don't have the budget for expensive training supplies. They're barely keeping up with purchasing desperately needed equipment.

Indy films are being done by extremely talented individuals who don't have allot of money to spend on special effects makeup. It's all they can do to scrape by just to make the film. Marketing takes up so much of their money and time.

So, perhaps I'll never get rich from my products, but I love what I do and can only hope that I've provided an inexpensive, but high-quality professional product that they can use.

My thanks for the success goes out to all the big name, Hollywood special effects artists who have helped me tremendously - and you all know who are. I am truly humbled by your unselfishness in sharing your secrets, formulas and techniques. But even more, your friendship is more valuable to me than you could imagine.

Okay - enough said. Now it's off to ship more items - Texas and Oregon are on the list today.

Here are the actual instructions that come with the TraumaFX Injury Molds and TraumaGel to give you an idea how easy and simple it really is:

Prosthetic Molds & TraumaGel Instructions:

Place TraumaGel in either a pan of hot water or the microwave until is in a liquid state. Have patience.

PAN METHOD: Heat water in a pan (not boiling!) and place TraumaGel bottle in the pan until it has liquefied. Keep flip-top in the closed position. Do NOT overheat! If too hot, it may warp your Prosthetic Molds.

MICROWAVE METHOD: Open the flip-top of the TraumaGel Bottle and place in the microwave. Heat on high in 5-second bursts, allowing approximately 30 seconds between bursts. Microwave until TraumaGel has liquefied. Again, do not heat too hot or it may warp your molds.

IMPORTANT MICROWAVE CAUTION: DO NOT HEAT SO MUCH THAT IT BURNS! If it burns, the TraumaGel will no longer be usable.

• Using a Q-Tip or brush, apply a VERY LIGHT coat of vegetable, mineral, or baby oil to the entire inside of the mold. Even a quick spray of PAM works great. Wipe off any excess with a paper towel.

NOTE: You should not even be able to see the oil in the mold. Although the mold doesn’t necessarily need an oil to act as a release, it makes the process faster. You could simply leave the TraumaGel in the mold for several hours until completely firm and it will release fine.

• Holding mold upright, squeeze in TraumaGel until the mold is approximately ½ full.

• While holding it in your hand, tilt the mold from side to side and forward and back. Slush it just to the edges of the prosthetic, not the entire mold interior. If you used a release, you will notice the TraumaGel beading and pulling away from the sides of the Prosthetic. This is normal. Keep slushing it around as before, and as the TraumaGel cools, it will begin to adhere. Keep your edges thin! When it begins to firm up, place your mold on a level surface so that the majority of the gel will settle to the center of the mold. See examples:

  • Place the molds into your refrigerator or freezer – about 30 - 45 minutes for the refrigerator and 15 - 25 minutes for the freezer. This procedure simply allows the TraumaGel to firm up faster.

  • Remove TraumaGel from the refrigerator or freezer and apply a generous coating of TraumaFX Setting Powder to the top of the prosthetic. Then, using tweezers or a sharp knife point, gently slide it under the edge of the prosthetic and carefully lift, avoiding the edges from folding onto themselves. Your prosthetic should release very easily. If not, put back in the refrigerator and allow to cool more.

  • When removing the prosthetic, DO NOT let it fold over on itself! Now, apply more powder to the other side. By powdering the prosthetic, it won’t stick to itself even if it folds over (especially the edges). This is a very important step.

  • If necessary, trim your prosthetics to the desired shape. If you carefully slushed the TraumaGel just to the edge of the prosthetic outline in the molds you may not even have to trim anything. The edges are micro thin for easy blending into the skin. Below is an example of finished prosthetics (notice the micro-thin edges):

Ok, ok - I hear you!

Because many of my customers have asked about buying all the materials they need in one kit for their casualty simulations (and Indy movie effects), I'm currently putting together two different selections.

One will be a kit with the "Basics" - everything you need to produce great casualty simulations.

The other will be a "Deluxe" kit - this kit will feature just about everything TraumaFX has to offer! Not only will the sizes of the products be larger (4 oz. instead of 2 oz. etc.), but it will also have MORE of the products included in the kit (two Trauma Makeup Wheels instead of one). This kit is designed for VERY LARGE mass casualty simulations. You will be able to use the kit for many years to come.

In addition, I will put together some "mini-kits". Gunshot wounds for example will come with their standard vacuuformed molds, but the kit will include Flesh colored TraumaGel, Blood, Adhesive and Remover.

All of the kits will be priced lower than if you bought the items individually.

I am also offering Latex Wound Prosthetics in the very near future. I have finished molding a BUNCH of sculpts and will begin production soon. Look for them!

Still working on the tutorials - it's amazing how much time they take. The makeup is simple and easy, but photographing everything and editing is what really takes some effort.

We're Getting There!

TraumaFX is really getting some recognition and products are beginning to move off the shelves! I want to thank all my customers for your trust in the products we provide.

Our latest valued customers are from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) - they simulated an auto crash to show what can really happen when you drink and drive. My hat is off to them for their creativity and determination in this worthy cause. I have been in the Emergency Medical Services field for 25 years, and many, many times I've seen first-hand the gross destruction of flesh and metal.

By the way, I've added many new products to the website (www.traumafx.com) and more will be displayed soon. Check it out if you get a chance and let me know what you think.

I will try to put up some tutorials on how to use the TraumaFX products to make REALISTIC injuries. It seems there are many people who are a little unsure how to do it. Understandable. Besides that, it'll be fun! Now I just need to find a few "true" friends who don't mind looking like a train hit them! (no, there won't be any hangover photos) ;)

Glass Shards!


I added soft, silicone glass shards to my website www.traumafx.com yesterday! (click on the picture and see a super-sized view!)

A good EMT or Paramedic Instructor wants their students to train realistically so they're prepared for what they'll see the real world - the street. Just slapping on some fake blood and smearing makeup doesn't cut it. It doesn't look real and every student knows it. But they'll never tell the Instructor it looks totally fake. They'll simply sigh and put up with it. That actually makes the training sub-standard. I don't think any instructor wants that. These shards will really add the realism.

These are really cool. They look exactly like real glass, but are completely safe - unless of course you decide to give one to your 1-year old to choke on. The silicone isn't your hardware store stuff for windows or bathtubs. It's is a special formula (and NOT cheap), so I'm pretty much selling them just a little above my cost. It's worth it to me. I not only want to make things affordable for the small, volunteer organizations, but I want my products to look REAL and be SAFE. Most of the fake glass you buy from some of the "big names" is very expensive. Allot of it is just thin Plexiglass. That's dangerous for a training scenario in my opinion. Plexiglass can provide some pretty good lacerations when pushed into your skin hard enough!

I designed my Glass Shards so you can use them as they are, or tear them into different shapes (sharp looking) or small bits (like an exploded automobile window). You really have to see and feel these to appreciate them. They will add total realism to any effect or scenario.

For the picture on the web site, I simply made a TraumaGel wound from one of the large laceration molds I sell, filled the inside of the laceration with some TraumFX Wound Filler and inserted a Glass Shard and took the picture. I scattered a few more shards around to make the picture look interesting. The Wound Filler is like a thick paste so it's easy to get just about anything to stand up in it. When it dries, the Wound Filler gets very firm but doesn't loose it's wet, meaty look. I love the stuff. It certainly makes Casualty Simulation injuries much easier to do.

Today, I'm taking the day off to teach a little Emergency Medicine to a group of really great students. I'll be back in the "Lab" tomorrow making more TraumaFX products....there's still so much to get on the website. More Graftobian products on the way too - should be here the first part of May. I CAN'T KEEP UP!

As I've explained earlier, in addition to my TraumaFX line, we're now selling some Graftobian makeup products on the website (www.traumafx.com). They are great products and reasonably priced. I like that.

It's hard to keep up on the website - I have so many of my own products to get on there yet. It's a full time job, but I'm getting there! I've had allot of customers so far considering I've only been online for a couple of weeks.

I still have to put much more time into marketing, but I want to get all the products on there first. I'm still in the R&D phase for some new things that customers will absolutely love. Here's the deal with makeup and casualty simulation makeup in particular - the retail makeup products you buy from the "big names" can be very expensive. The entire reason for developing my TraumaFX products is to offer the SAME items at a cost that will fit the budgets of even small volunteer ambulance services, fire departments, hospitals, etc. Yes, it costs $$ for testing, approval, etc., but they will still be more reasonably priced than what most are paying now. Little organizations need training supplies just as much as a big municipal agency. But they need something they can afford. Fundraisers, bake sales and pancake breakfasts are sometimes their only means of surviving . That's why TraumaFX was created.

I believe in a quality product. Some might think I'm a perfectionist, but I believe excellence sells. Excellence is not a skill or an education - it's your attitude.

Well, I've FINALLY done it! I've been working and selling TraumaFX products for quite awhile now, but I've taken the leap and went public with a web site you can order TraumaFX products from! Let me backup and give you a little info about why this all happened:


TraumaFX began in 2002 as an idea to help ambulance services, fire departments, EMT’s, paramedics, hospitals, CERT teams, Disaster and Emergency Services, and the Military create cost effective, but REAL, injury simulations for their training. There is NO substitute for realism when it comes to training.

As owner of TraumaFX, I have over 25 years experience in the emergency medical services field. I have trained countless numbers of responders and early on found a curious phenomenon when it came to the difference between training scenarios and real life. I found that nearly ¾ of all responders who trained with substandard trauma simulation literally “froze” and became confused as to how to treat the victim of a real event. Their senses were overwhelmed by the real trauma they were seeing for the first time. The makeup that was done in their classroom training was nothing like what they would experience on the street. That’s when I decided that if you are going to train for the real thing, then the training must appear real!

Hence, I began looking for ways to provide those responsible for training with an economical, easy, and different way to present the accuracy of real wounds, blood, and other trauma, including WMD. It had to look real. It had to be believable.

After many months of experimentation and with the help from other movie special effects artists, I developed the TraumaFX line you see here on this website. Although my products have been on the market since 2003, this is the first time I have offered them on the Internet.

Whether it’s ultra-real simulated blood, lacerations, cuts, bullet wounds (entrance and exit), avulsions, open fractures, slime and snot for chemical WMD scenarios, simulated sweat, makeup for bruises and trauma, realistic first, second and even 3-D third degree burns, shock, anthrax, smallpox, blisters, or even severe frostbite, I offer it at TraumaFX.
